MANNING: “We are definitely improving week on week”

Gillingham Ladies’ Ellie Manning spoke to the media after Gills ran out 3-0 winner over Herne Bay to reach the 2019 Kent FA Women’s Cup final;

Manning on… the game: “It’s pretty similar to last week, the girls scored two goals early in the first half against MK Dons and it was nice to go into this game and be able to do the same again. We were able to go into the second half and create more chances, and then to get the third right as the last whistle went, it was great.”

Manning on… the goals: “I think there definitely could have been more goals. All credit to their keeper [Sarah Cooper] she was really good, saved quite a few of our chances. But yeah, there definitely could have been more goals. I wasn’t there last week, I heard the girls had a few chances but they’ve definitely had more this week. We’re definitely improving week on week with the chances we create, we just need to be a bit more clinical in front of goal.”

Manning on… improvement: “The cup games are a bit different to the league, it allows us to play a bit more freely, we’re expecting to be against teams who are necessarily not as good as us, in the leagues below. But you can’t go into a game looking at it like that, we wanted to come in and get to the cup final. But in terms of how we were on the ball today, it got better in the second half, we tried new things, tried new formations and new ways of playing, just playing in a different way to how we normally do.”

Manning on… Lauren Williams’ return in opposition: “It was really great to see Loz again, we’ve been friends for about six or seven years. I’d love for her to come back to Gills, but she played well, and it’s good to play against her. We played centre mid together, so yeah, it was nice to play against her. She’s a good laugh and a great girl.”

Manning on… knowing Williams’ game: “Yeah. When we were playing together at Gills she was more of a defender, I know she’s always wanted to play centre mid, same as me really, I’ve played at the back and wanted to play centre mid, but I know how she likes to play so we tried to prevent that but yeah, she still had a good game today.”

Manning on… the all Gillingham final: “Bragging rights definitely! We did an 11v11 at training on Thursday, we play with the development quite a lot, a lot of their girls come and play with us and a lot of our girls go to play with them, so we know a lot about each other, but it’ll be great to play against each other and have bragging rights at the end if we win!”
