Following Sunday’s 2-0 win against Milton Keynes Ladies at Chatham Town. Gills’ manager Jack Wheeler spoke to the media, to give his verdict on the first result of 2019.
Wheeler on… The Result: “Really pleased with the team performance. We applied ourselves really well to our game plan today, we executed it very well and a very professional performance. It’s not often you get all the parts of the puzzle that click, but i thought they clicked today. You can say all those that came off the pitch today, never left anything on it, which you can say is really pleasing. It is a foundation you can kick on to for the rest of the season.”
Wheeler on… Return From Winter Break: “The girls have been doing well, we trained late into the last part of last year. From that we looked to get them back in early, it didn’t help that we didn’t have a game last week because that just prolongs the getting yourselves back in after Christmas. But we didn’t look like we were rusty at all and i am quite pleased with that.”
Wheeler on… Both Forwards Scoring: “The job of the forwards is to put the ball in the back of the net. Both the girls are really happy. Both have been doing really well. Breton had just come back from holiday, so we threw her in at the deep end a bit today. Alice has been progressing really well love the last few weeks and months. We are really pleased with the both of them.”
Wheeler on… First Half Advantage: “To go in at half time at two nil, was really good. It gives the players some confidence and a foundation to kick on. We knew then that in the second half, Milton Keynes would throw the kitchen sink at us. We know, if your behind and have half a chance of getting in it your going to go out and throw caution to the wind. We knew we had to weather the storm to a certain degree, i think that the damage was done in the first half really. We played really well, we made some good combinations between our players, stuck to the gameplay we asked them to do and as management, we are really happy.”
Wheeler on… Second Half Game Management: “Teams will always have spells it doesn’t matter who you play against, wether its you or the other team, you will have a certain section of the game your going to implement yourself in, or be on top. It’s how you deal with it, do you let them back into the game or go and get yourself back in it, it all depends what side you are on. Today we managed to slow the game down, dictate the pace of what we were doing and it is for the first time in a while we did that.”
Wheeler on… : “It’s good to start the new year with a big three points for us. It’s been a while since we won in the league. It’s important that we use that to kick on and we don’t really want to be looking over our shoulder and instead to be looking above us now. We are still the only team to take points of Coventry this season, there will be scalps all the time and we need to make sure we are performing like we did today with the weeks and the months that are coming in the league.”
Wheeler on… Debutant Bethany Powell and Recent Signing Lauren George: “We said to the players at the end, we praised Beth [Powell], she has come in having not played that much football for the team she played for before. She’s come in to us and done really well, we are happy with the progression. Exactly the same with Lauren [George], she set up the second goal today, really really pleased.”
Wheeler on… Kent FA Women’s Cup Semi Final next: “Every competition, you make sure you apply yourself and make sure you do well in. We are going to look to kick off from today and get through to the Kent FA Women’s Cup Final. It would be lovely to have an all Gills final, which we are looking do, hopefully the Development Squad and the First Team can do the business next week.”
