Gillingham Ladies centre-back Vicky Ashton-Jones spoke to the media, after Gills secured a place in the last eight of the Kent FA Women’s Cup at Medway Priestfield Stadium.
Ashton-Jones on… result: “It was a tough result, we had to grind that out. 2-1 is a fair scoreline, overall i think we were the better side. It’s good to progress in the cup and happy with the result.”
Ashton-Jones on… conceding early: “It’s frustrating, you never want to concede in ninety minutes, to concede early on is frustrating. Its nice to settle into the game and find your feet, and start playing football and progress from there. It was frustrating to concede early on and i thought we showed character after the goal which before today’s game we may have let get to our heads a little, our heads would drop and then would struggle to build back into the game. We kind of hit the reset button again, ignored it and carried on with our game plan. It showed a bit of maturity, which at times we show a lack of that. A bit of mature game management, didn’t let it bother us and just cracked on with the task at hand.”
Ashton-Jones on… building momentum :“Once you go 1-0 down its a bit of game management and principals, lets stick to the game plan, lets not panic, there’s no need to stress about stuff thats happened. Your always confident in the players and the team to go and get goals, there was no need to panic, once we got going you could feel there was goals in us. No-one panicked, no-one let their heads drop, on-one started to do anything they shouldn’t be doing. On the pitch you could feel us settling in, finding our feet. It wasn’t a fantastic first half but to go in at half time at 1-1 is quite a fair assessment of where the first half was.”
Ashton-Jones on… better second half :“Most defiantly, its something we struggled with so far this season. Our second half performances haven’t been good enough as our first halves have been. Again we can take great confidence from the second half this week, that it was a better half than the first. It’s probably the only game other than the Coventry game where we’ve carried a momentum into the second half from the first. We felt we had more control of the game and felt like we would go and get that second.”
Ashton-Jones on… beating current holders:” I think you can be confident, but someone of my age and experience will know to take one round at a time. We will see who we get next and deal with that game as we need too, and progress to the game after that. We as Gillingham Football Club have held that cup quite a lot over the years, it will be nice to bring it back to the club.”
Ashton-Jones on… three wins on the bounce :” Yes but we have a bit of a break now. Having those wins is good, i know we haven’t got the fixtures coming up in the next couple of weeks but it will lead us into the next where we won’t have so much of a dip when we plays our first game after the break. I hope that won’t happen as we will prepare correctly. We went through a bit of a rough patch with fixtures and result so to get another win to make it three on the bounce is great for confidence and what we are trying to do.”
