Gills wrap up FA WPL Div One title

Gillingham Ladies secured the FA Women’s Premier League South East Division One title with a thumping victory over Norwich City Ladies.

It didn’t take long for Gillingham to break the deadlock. Five minutes into the game, Fliss Gibbons did well to get the ball into the penalty area, she passed it to Charlotte Gurr who coolly slotted the ball home. 1-0

Four minutes later, Gurr broke through the defence and slotted the ball past Laura Hartley in the Norwich goal to double their lead. 2-0

Norwich’s closest effort of the first half came when Aimee Durrant’s free kick was close of the target, the shot just over Courtney Shanly’s cross bar.

Gurr completed her hat trick when she got a the end of a cross from Grace Seely. Her initial header crashed off the crossbar, but Gurr reacted quickest to follow up and nod the rebound home. 3-0

Gibbons added Gills fourth when she turned in a cross from Seely, who had worked the ball fantastically down the left wing past the Norwich full back, to deliver the ball low into the six yard box. Gibbons diverted the ball through the Norwich goalkeepers legs. 4-0

With just over half an hour on the clock, Jenny Newman scored a rifled volley hitting the top corner leaving the Norwich keeper flat footed. 5-0

Gibbons netted her brace before the interval, after some clever one touch passing around the edge of the box, Gibbons cooly struck the ball low into the bottom corner. 6-0

HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM LFC 6 NORWICH CITY LFC 0

Gillingham started well into the second half as well, straight from the kickoff, an unfortunate deflection from Aimee Durrent saw the Norwich defender score an own goal to give Gillingham Ladies their seventh goal of the game. 7-0

April Bowers added another goal for Gills Ladies. She brought the ball under control in the penalty area, she held off her defender before powering a shot past Hartley and the ball zipped into the back of the net. 8-0

Gurr added her fourth goal of the game when she was played through on goal, she hit a powerful shot on goal, but the Norwich goalkeeper couldn’t get hold of the shot and the ball went into the net. 9-0

Gills tenth goal was a fortunate one, Gills shot on goal deflected off Gibbons and completely threw the goalkeeper, sailing into the empty side of the net. 10-0

Second half substitute Bethany Nugent was influential in the Gills eleventh goal of the game, holding off her marker on the wing to send the ball into the waiting Newman. The Gills forward swept the ball past Norwich’s keeper. 11-0

Just five minutes later Nugent turned from provider to scorer, Emily Symonds providing the assist for Nugent to convert. 12-0

The final whistle cued some joyous celebrations from the players, culminating with Gills Ladies Captain Jade Keogh lifted the title which sees them promoted back the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division at the second time of asking.
