Gills win at Enfield to go five clear at top of league

Gillingham Ladies extended their lead at the top of the Women’s Premier League South East 1 table after a comfortable away victory over Enfield Town Ladies.

 

Gills started the game brightly with a through ball from Fliss Gibbons into the middle of the penalty area gave Charlotte Gurr the chance to score, but she dragged her shot wide of the post.

 

Gills opening the scoring when the ball was played to Jenny Newman who ran into the area and into a chance against Katie Chan, Newman didn’t have the space to take a shot on goal, but she passed to Rosie Kmita on the edge of the penalty box, and she slotted the ball into the both corner of the net.

 

Gills’ second goal came in the 34th minute from a corner. The ball was flicked onto Gibbons at the back post, and she calmly placed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

 

In injury time of the first half, Gills scored their third goal when the ball was passed around the edge of the penalty area, Gurr got to hold of the ball and hit a beautiful curing shot which zipped past Chan and into the net.

 

Gills added another goal in injury time to make it 4-0 at the break, a lopping ball over the top was picked up by Gurr. She raced away to inside the penalty area, before placing a low shot past Chan for her second goal of the game.

After eight minutes of the second half, Gills were awarded a penalty when Gibbons made a run into the penalty area and she was fouled by Macy Diaz. Gibbons dusted herself off to drill a powerful penalty to the right side of the net for her second goal of the game.

 

Gills were awarded a second penalty with ten minutes left of the tie, this time for a handball from a corner. Second half substitute Kallie Balfour stepped up to drill the penalty into the top corner to score her first goal since returning from injury.

 

Gills completed the scoring by adding a seventh goal late in the game. Balfour got the ball on the left edge of the penalty area and she hit a low and powerful shot which sped past Chan and into the bottom corner of the net.
