Report by Julian Hart
Gillingham Ladies go within one point of league leaders Milton Keynes Dons Ladies, after an assured 6-0 victory over Enfield Town Ladies at K Sports on Sunday afternoon.
Gills Ladies looked to secure a second home win in a week, and duly delivered with a hat trick from Fliss Gibbons along with goals a piece from Rosie Kmita, Jade Keogh and Jenny Newman.
After last week’s slow start to the game against Denham, Gills got off the mark within the first two minutes of the match against Enfield. Charlotte Gurr’s pass was excellently timed to feed in Fliss Gibbons, one on one with Katie Chan in the Enfield goal, and the Gills forward slotted home. 1-0
Gillingham were close to adding to the scoreline when Jenny Newman’s low angled shot narrowly missed the far post with a quarter of an hour gone.
Enfield had a chance to test the Gills defence twenty minutes into the game, forward Regan Coleman broke past the Gills back line but keeper Courtney Shanly was alert to rush out and close down the space before Coleman was able to get a shot away.
Gills doubled their lead shortly after, Fliss Gibbons quick turn of pace and clever foot work set the forward into a pocket of space on the edge of the box, with the chance to unleash a shot straight into the bottom corner of the net. 2-0
Rosie Kmita causing problems on the wing for Enfield’s defenders, the midfielder cut inside and tried an ambitious shot from 25 yards. Her effort was straight into the arms of Chan who dealt with the shot with ease.
Enfield looking for a way back into the game were nearly handed a golden chance when the Gills defence played a dangerous pass across the back line. Coleman was alert and it took a combination of Courtney Shanly and Vanisha Patel to clear the ball to safety.
Gills took control of the game five minutes before half time, Rosie Kmita cut in from the left wing beat the Enfield defenders and drove a powerful shot past Chan to net her first home goal for the club. 3-0
It was nearly four before the break, Gibbons delivered a cross into the penalty area as Emily Symonds strode into the box. A brilliant block by the Enfield defence managed to send the shot from Symonds over the crossbar for a corner.
HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM LADIES 3 ENFIELD LADIES 0
As quickly as Gills scored in the first interval, they found the net equally as quick in the second half. Gibbons rounding off her hat trick, tapping home from close range, after her initial shot was denied by the Enfield goalkeeper. 4-0
Gillingham continued the pressure and added to their tally when Jade Keogh’s volley hit the back of the net. Kmita’s cross from the left wing onto the penalty spot was met by Keogh who connected to notch Gills fifth. 5-0
Keogh nearly added her second of the game on the hour mark, jumping highest amongst the Enfield defence and sent a header narrowly wide of the right hand post.
Gills rounded off the resounding scoreline with ten minutes left to play, Jenny Newman’s tireless effort was rewarded when the chance arose. The forward took the ball in her stride and sent a powerful shot across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. 6-0
The win sees Gillingham go just a point off league leaders Milton Keynes Dons Ladies, who weren’t in action on Sunday afternoon, with two games in hand.
