Gills in draw with league leaders Wimbledon

Gillingham Ladies 1 AFC Wimbledon Ladies 1
Report by John Seager

Gillingham Ladies remain unbeaten so far this season, despite being held to a draw by AFC Wimbledon Ladies in an entertaining game.

It was Gillingham who had the first chance of the game, when Lauren Williams set up Amy Taylor by putting her through on goal, but her chance was gathered up easily but Shanell Salgado.

Taylor was again denied by Salgado two minutes later; she broke through on goal and hit a powerful shot at goal but Salgado did well to save the shot and clear the ball away.

Gillingham continued with their pressing and they deservedly took the lead on 17 minutes; the ball was not cleared by the Dons defence, this let in Jade Keogh to get the ball inside the penalty area, and she hit a powerful shot past Salgado and into the net.

The Dons managed to get back into the game when the Gills defence failed to clear the ball, and Emma Keady was given the ball six yards out and she slotted the ball past Courtney Shanly to level the game.

Gills almost retook the lead when they worked the ball into the penalty area, April Bowers drilled a powerful header at goal, but the ball was cleared off the line. The rebound fell straight to Fliss Gibbons who tried to have a shot at goal but she hit the ball over the cross bar for a goal kick.

AFC Wimbledon had a chance to take the lead on the stroke of half time. The ball was crossed into the penalty area which a shot was cannoned off the post and bundled into the net. However, the linesman judged the forward to be offside and the goal was disallowed.

Gills started the second half looking for a goal to retake the lead; they almost had two goals when both Gibbons and Emily Symonds had great chances to score, but their shots went narrowly wide of the goal.

The chances were starting to stack up for the Gills; Jade Keogh hit a delightful shot at goal, but it cannoned off the crossbar and Gibbons drilled another shot wide of the goal.

Gillingham spent the last final few minutes pressing forward, but they couldn’t create any more chances and had to settle for a point against the Dons.
