Gillingham Ladies made a mid week trip to play Enfield Town LFC in the FA Women’s Premier League on Wednesday, April 6th.
Manager Jack Wheeler made two changes to the starting line up from last time out against Lowestoft at the weekend, with Ashleigh Loosemore and Lydia Wills returning with Chelsea Wallace and Shannon Redhouse dropping to the substitutes bench.
Gill Ladies had the better chances but were unable to find the break through needed and returned to Kent with a point.
Enfield LFC started the brighter with early possession but it was Gills Ladies that had the first chances through Kallie Balfour who broke through the defence but the goalkeeper saved the shot to go for a corner. The following cross from the corner was headed goalwards by Balfour but it was cleared by the home side.
Enfield had their first attack of the game which led to a corner for the home side, but the set piece was well defended and the final shot was saved by Courtney Shanly.
Following a foul by the home side a free kick was awarded to Gillingham, the subsequent cross was played through to Lydia Wills in the box but she was just off side. Shortly after this chance Wills broke through the defence and took a shot from outside the box but that was saved by the goalkeeper.
With the half progressing and Gillingham finding a foothold in the tie, Balfour continued to cause concern for the home side and put a good cross into the box but this was just behind Madison North’s run.
A great ball through midfield was played to Balfour, whose run was perfectly timed to stay on side but her shot was saved well by the goalkeeper to go for a corner. The corner was then well defended by the home side.
Lauren Davis broke down the right with a great run, cutting into the box and managing to find Balfour but her shot was again saved by the goalkeeper. Shortly after Balfour made another great run that led to her being one on one with the goalkeeper but her effort on goal was saved.
Enfield had an attack on the Gillingham goal late on in the second half, this was stopped through a great tackle by Vanisha Patel but she took a knock in the process and there was a short break in play while she received treatment before returning to the pitch.
The last touch in the first half was by Enfield who had a shot at goal from the edge of the box, however, this went just wide. Gillingham with the best of the chances in the first half but all square at the break.
Half Time: Enfield Town LFC 0 Gillingham Ladies 0
The second half started with the first substitution for Gills Ladies, Shannon Redhouse came on to replace Lauren Davis. The early moments of the second half were fairly even with neither side making any clear chances.
Emma Tune made a lovely run through midfield and looked like she wouldn’t be stopped until she was fouled outside the box, this time the free kick was taken by Madison North and her shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
Enfield had a period of possession in central midfield but no real danger to the Gillingham goal and the final shot was easily saved by Courtney Shanly.
Gills Ladies had another attack on the Enfield goal which led to a corner, the shot from the corner was blocked and cleared by the home side. From this clearance Enfield went on a counter attack which led to a corner of their own but there were no concerns and Gillingham defended well and retained possession.
With twenty minutes to go Manager Jack Wheeler made his second substitution with Chelsea Wallace coming on to replace Vanisha Patel.
Balfour again made a great run and was clear on goal until she was fouled right on the edge of the box, a free kick was awarded and the defender received a yellow card.
Emma Tune took the free kick but Gillingham could not take advantage and the shot was just over the cross bar. Following the tackle on Balfour there was a small coming together, both Balfour and an Enfield player received a yellow card.
Jade Keogh picked up the ball in midfield and threaded through a delightful ball to Kallie Balfour who was in on goal but her low effort went wide. Shortly after this chance Balfour received the ball and broke through the defence but her shot was palmed over the bar by the goalkeeper for a corner.
Enfield Town had a chance of their own and were clear on goal but only to be denied by Gillingham forward Kallie Balfour. Straight down the other end there was another foul on Balfour, the free kick was taken and the ball dropped into the six yard box but would not fall for a Gills Ladies player and was cleared just in time by Enfield.
In the last minute of the game Kallie Balfour was almost through again but a great challenge saw the ball go out for corner which was dealt with by Enfield and the final whistle was blown with the game ending 0-0.
