Gillingham Ladies 6
Gillingham Ladies made the long trip to play Lowestoft Town LFC in the FA Women’s Premier League yesterday afternoon. Gills Ladies last game was the reverse fixture of the same tie a week ago, Manager Jack Wheeler made three changes with Katie Hardaker and Paige Baker-Carroll returning to the starting line up and Megan Maslak made her first start after spending a period out on loan. Five goals in the first half and one goal early in the second half were enough to secure all three points for Gills Ladies to take back to Kent.
Gills Ladies had good possession in the opening minutes with a shot by Kallie Balfour that was blocked, then followed a free kick taken by Emma Tune but the subsequent shot was saved by the goal keeper.
It didn’t take Gills Ladies long to take the lead, on the fifth minute a good cross into the box and Paige Baker-Carroll was perfectly positioned to finish with a great header. Within a minute of the first goal Gills Ladies doubled their lead through Megan Maslak. Gillingham’s early presence in the game continued as Emma Tune had a chance with a wonderful shot on the volley from outside the box but it went just wide of the post.
Lowestoft Town LFC then had their first chance of the game but this was easily saved by Courtney Shanly.
Gills Ladies were dominating possession and with a second corner in quick succession Kallie Balfour had an effort with a header that was well defended by Lowestoft Town LFC. Shortly after Balfour picked up the ball just outside the box and with a great shot extended Gills Ladies lead to 3-0.
Lowestoft Town LFC had a chance straight after the restart with a free kick just outside the box, but the shot was just over the cross bar. Minutes later the home side were awarded another free kick this time the shot hit the side netting.
With the half progressing and Gillingham finding a foothold in the tie, Balfour had another shot blocked for a corner and the subsequent cross was cleared by the home side. But Lowestoft had a breakaway on the counter, straight down the other end a mix up at the back nearly lead to a goal for Lowestoft Town LFC, however, only a corner came of the error and this was well defended by Gills Ladies.
Balfour had a number of chances saved by the Lowestoft Town LFC goalkeeper before a shot by Jade Keogh that was adjudged by the Assistant to have crossed the line, after some debate the goal was given to extend Gills Ladies lead to 4-0.
Shortly after Lowestoft Town LFC had a shot of their own but this was saved by Courtney Shanly, which led to a counter attack for Gills Ladies as Lauren Davis was played in with a great ball and she placed it nicely to extend Gills Ladies lead to 5-0.

Early in the second half there was a stop in play due to Lauren Davis going down injured, which led to Manager Jack Wheeler making his first substitution of the match with Ashleigh Loosemore replacing Davis.
Shortly after this a corner was awarded to Gills Ladies, Tune then produced a sublime shot at goal that hit the cross bar and landed perfectly for a tap in by Baker-Carroll to extend Gills Ladies lead further to 6-0.
Lowestoft Town LFC were awarded a free kick just outside the box but again the shot was just over the cross bar.
Mid way through the second half a second substitution for Gills Ladies with Lydia Wills replacing Megan Maslak and five minutes later Georgia Reece came on for Katie Hardaker.
There was a short stop in play as Balfour received extensive treatment but she was able to continue. Gills Ladies continued to have chances, however, the home side put in a good defensive performance in the second half and had some possession of their own late on in the second half.
Gills Ladies had a couple of chances for Baker-Carroll and Balfour in the last few minutes but both were unable to take the chances and the game ended 6-0 to Gills Ladies.
