Gillingham Ladies 1 Crystal Palace Ladies 1

A late penalty from Gemma Bryant denied Gillingham Ladies all three points as they were held to a draw against Crystal Palace Ladies at Chatham Town FC.

Gillingham started the game on the front foot, and they had their first chance through April Bowers. A corner was crossed into her and she managed to get a shot on goal but sadly it went over the crossbar.

Gillingham’s second chance came from a free kick. Charlie Thurston was fouled outside the penalty area, and the ball was drilled to Paige Baker-Carroll who hit a well times shot, but again it just went wide of the goal.

Crystal Palace had their first chance of the game when Nicha Dyett broke through on goal, but she could compose her shot and the ball was easily gathered up by Courtney Shanly.

  
Gills took the lead on 27 minutes when they won a free kick on the edge of the penalty box. Emma Tune placed the ball and curled a brilliant shot over the wall and into the top left corner of the net, to the delight of her teammates and manager Jack Wheeler.

Gills then looked to add a second goal through a corner, the ball was crossed into the path of Baker-Carroll, and she did manage to get a head on the ball but the ball went narrowly wide of the goal.

The final chance of the first half came from Gillingham. A corner was crossed in by Kate-Marie Hardacker, Palace failed to clear the ball away and this gave Kallie Balfour to have a shot on goal, but the ball went over the crossbar.

Crystal Palace started the second half strongly as they looked to get back on level terms. They have spent the first ten minutes trying to create some chances, but they were held out by a stubborn Gillingham defence.

Their first real threat of a goal came from Abigail Igbavboa. She got the ball on the edge of the box, and then went on a great run, before hitting a low shot towards goal, but the ball went narrowly wide of the goal.

  

Palace did get back on level terms when they were awarded a penalty on 77 minutes. They work the ball into the area which saw Thurston commit the foul. Gemma Bryant stepped up to drill the ball past Shanly to put the Eagles back into the game.

Both sides tried hard in the last ten minutes to win the game, but it was Gillingham’s Jade Keogh who had the final chance to win the game for her side. Tune was fouled outside the penalty box which Keogh drill the ball towards goal, the ball did beat Sam Saint, but it went narrowly over the crossbar.
