Vice Captain on Premier League Plate Quarter Final tie

This Sunday sees Gillingham Ladies make a long awaited return home to Chatham Town.

Our last home fixture was nine weeks ago when we hosted Tottenham in the Ryman League cup, back at the end of November. Postponements and Cup ventures have seen Gills often on the road and welcoming a return to home soil.

As we return back to the familiar comforts of Chatham Town it is another Cup fixture ahead, after victory in extra time against Southern Premier League side Lewes Ladies in the last round of the FA Women’s Premier League Plate, Northern Premier League side Newcastle United WFC are the visitors for the Quarter Final tie.

Ahead of the game, we caught up with Gills centre back and vice captain Charlie Thurston on the mood in the camp ahead of the long awaited game at home;

“I, along with the rest of the team are really excited to finally be back! It’s always an advantage playing at home and something I look forward to.

“We are pushing for promotion and we’re in the final stretch of the season, not having to travel and playing on a pitch we are used to is a huge advantage.”

We asked Charlie about the continuing run of Cup games, this Sunday’s game is set to be Gills fifth cup game in a row;

“Playing in the Cup competitions is always a little more exciting! It also gives us an opportunity to see where we’re at in comparison to the leagues above. It’ll be a really good test!”

Gills have seen themselves tested against higher division opposition in four of the six cup ties so far this season.

The latest only last week as Gills came back from Forest Green Rovers progressing in the FA Cup. Charlie revealed the squad are pleased with being able to go up against Premier League teams;

“Playing against sides above us and winning is a move in the right direction.

We want to be playing against teams like that week in week out.

It gives us something to strive for and opportunity to prove to ourselves and others that we are good enough and we have improved since last season.”

Gillingham Ladies v Newcastle United WFC @ Chatham Town FC this Sunday 2pm kick off.

Following Sunday’s game our next scheduled home game is against Tottenham Hotspur LFC in the SSE FA WOMEN’S CUP on the 7th February. Come down to Chatham Town and #RoarUsOn.
