Wheeler reflects on FA Cup progress

Gillingham Ladies progressed to the Third Round of the SSE FA Women’s Cup on Sunday after a penalty shootout decided the tie with Forest Green Rovers. Heroics from Gills keeper Courtney Shanly saving three penalties to set up a home tie against either Swindon or Tottenham.

After the game Manager Jack Wheeler was pleased with the result to see his side get 2016 off to a winning start, but admits the performance wasn’t up to scratch;

“We are all very happy to progress through to the next round of the FA Cup. We made very hard work of it though, I wasnt overly happy with our performance, its been hard to try and keep the girls fit and sharp when we havent had a game since the 6th December.

But the girls dug in together in some unfavourable playing conditions and managed to get the win.”

Gillingham’s opponents in the next round are yet to be decided as Swindon and Tottenham suffered another postponement. The victor of the tie with travel to Chatham Town, Wheeler was keen that the Gills will get back onto familiar soil after a prolonged series of home postponements and away games.

“I am certainly looking forward to playing back at Chatham, as we haven’t had a game there since November. Having a home tie always helps, gives our local supporters a chance to come and watch us and get behind the girls in what will be a tough game.”

11 of the 15 remaining Gills fixtures are home ties, in what could be a crucial end of season run in as Gills target promotion, manager Wheeler is hopeful to make Gills a strong force at home at Chatham and make it a tough place for teams to come.

“I’ve always stated from the start of the season that we need to make Chatham Town a fortress for us.

It’s really important that we continue to put in good performances and keep picking up vital points now we are in the business end of the season.

It would be great to get some momentum behind our fixtures with continued performances from the girls and the fantastic support from our fans at our home ground.”

Gillingham Ladies next scheduled home game is Newcastle United WFC in the FA WPL Plate on the 31st January. Come down to Chatham Town and #RoarUsOn.
