FA Cup Preview: Forest Green Rovers

Gillingham Ladies continue their FA Cup campaign tomorrow following last weeks postponement due to the bad weather, with a trip to FA Women’s Premier League side Forest Green Rovers Ladies.

Gillingham’s FA Cup run so far this season has seen the Gills progress through two qualifying rounds with wins over AFC Wimbledon and Herne Bay, before a victory at London Corinthians in Round 1 set up the tie with Forest Green Rovers.

Tomorrow’s oppositions Forest Green Rovers are unfamiliar opponents for Gills, Rovers won promotion to the WPL Southern division last season while Gillingham fell to Division One South, the clubs having not faced each other in recent seasons.

Manager Jack Wheeler admits that the fixture is likely to be a good cup tie with both team looking at the home draw that awaits in the next round for the winner.

“I think the tie will be a very competitive one, we don’t really know too much about them as haven’t played them previously.”

“But there is a lot to play for for both teams, a home tie in the next round and some prize money to go to the club.”

The Gills look to kick off 2016 following the winter break and postponements either side of that, it means the club have not played a game for six weeks. Wheeler is keen to see the team get the new year off on the right foot and set the tone for the rest of the season.

“We are very keen to kick start 2016 in the right way, it hasn’t been the best of starts with two postponents.

The girls have been working hard in training and I know they will be fired up and ready for the game after the winter break.

If we apply ourselves in a professional way on Sunday, I have every faith in the ability of our squad that we can progress to the next round, which is something myself and the club want us to do.”

A home draw against either Swindom Town LFC or Tottenham Hotspur LFC awaits the winner of tomorrow’s game in Round 3 of the SSE FA Women’s Cup.

Gillingham Ladies next scheduled home game is Newcastle United WFC in the FA WPL Plate on the 31st January. Come down to Chatham Town and #RoarUsOn.
