Gills Boss Delighted With Cup Victory

Gillingham Ladies Manager Jack Wheeler was delighted to see his side battle to victory against Lewes Ladies on Sunday afternoon.

The Gills visited the FA WPL Southern Side in the League’s Plate competition and were able to see out extra time to secure a 5-3 victory.

“I’m thrilled with the girls’ efforts and the result they’ve achieved to match their performance. They fought really hard and to the very end in extremely difficult conditions.”

“We always knew Lewes were going to be very tricky opponents, especially after Wednesday’s game when we got a glimpse of the quality teams that league possess. Lewes were good opposition but I think we showed quality in a very open, entertaining fixture.”

The Gills manager made seven changes to his starting line up, calling upon younger players to make the step up.

“Every game this year we have a good presentation of Centre of Excellence graduates and Girls Academy players. Against Lewes, our young players really had to step up and secure us the win. Each week they are developing. For most, it’s their first season of senior women’s football and the experience they’re getting will hold them in great stead.”

Wheeler continued to praise his squad saying:

“Today we demonstrated the strength and depth we have in the squad and how unified the whole club is. We have fans and family travelling to support the girls. There’s a lot of momentum and support off the pitch which is propelling us and that’s great.”

“The girls got their reward after a tough week of fixtures. I’ve been really impressed by their unity and the way they all fight for each other. We’ve got lots more games to play over the festive period, and that togetherness should hold us in fantastic stead.”

Gillingham Ladies travel to London Corinthians this Sunday. The hosts previously defeating the Gills to knock them out of the Kent Cup.

“The result hurt us” revealed Jack. “The FA Cup has always been a competition the club has prioritized and we are keen to get a result and put right the one from a few weeks ago.”
