Manager Jack Wheeler was pleased with what he described as one of Gillingham Ladies “best team performances” against Cambridge WFC on Sunday afternoon.
The Ladies extended their good run of form in the league until December, coming back from a goal behind to secure a 1-1 draw in Bury St Edmonds.
After the match, Wheeler said the display was one of the best from his side under his tenure.
“Today the girls had to show a different side. I know there’s quality and skill in our side and that’s held us in good stead so far this season. Against Cambridge, the girls needed to be patient and resilient and they were.”
“I have no complaints with any player, including my substitutes who played an important role. Cambridge put their entire team behind the ball and the girls showed great quality to dominate for long periods.”
“Of course it would have been nice to get a second and I think our second half display would have been deserving of three points but Cambridge defended really well, putting everything in front of us. We’re going to come across teams doing that a lot, so to create the opportunities we did was pleasing.”
The run in the League is something Wheeler is pleased with but attentions turned automatically to Wednesday’s Ryman League clash at Chatham Town.
“The fixtures are coming thick and fast and I’m really looking forward to welcoming Spurs on Wednesday evening. Evening games always have a special atmosphere. Spurs will be hurting after their result on Sunday, so we know they’ll be a real challenge to play against.”
“Our girls have earned the opportunity to test themselves against higher league opposition and we’ve got that chance twice this week. It’s going to be a really good week for the group and I’m excited to see how many more gears we can go up.”
“We’ve got a good group at Gillingham Ladies, the team work really hard for each other and that is a great quality and one we will rely on for two tough Cup games this week.”
Gillingham Ladies take on Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday 25th November at Chatham Town FC. Kick off is at 7:45pm.
