Relief surrounded The Gallagher Stadium on Wednesday night as Gillingham Ladies fought back from two goals down to retain the Kent Women’s Cup for a record breaking four consecutive year, overcoming a tough London Corinthians team.
Jubilant scenes at the full time whistle as Gills Ladies players produced an accomplished second half performance to win the final 5-3.
Player of the match and brace scorer Ashlee Hincks admitted the side’s first half performance was not up to scratch but was delighted with the response and work rate in the second period.
“We made it hard work but everyone is really happy. We let ourselves down in the first half, I think in the second we came out with a bit of determination and grit and made sure we won the right to win the game. Everyone dug deep.”
Captain Lauren Williams echoed her team mate’s sentiments; “We made some mistakes which led to us being two goals down and you can’t do that in a cup final and then not react.”
“We had to really dig deep, fair play to the girls for getting us back to 2-2 at the break and we were much better in the second half.””
“We got our reward in the end, it’s been a tough season so it’s nice to have some silverware and to win the cup is very pleasing.”
Manager Simon Ratcliffe expressed his delight at taking the silverware back to Priestfield and hopes the victory can propel the team as the prepare for the final four crucial FA WPL fixtures left this season.
“I’m pleased to get a result. We started reasonably well, gave away to silly goals, got back in the game and then conceded another soft goal but ultimately it was reasonably comfortable in the end.”
“It’s a start prior to the last four games of the season. Let’s hope we take this forward for those games, get a bit of confidence and lead to us staying in the division we are in.”
