Gills Ladies Storm To Victory

Tommy McMeekin

On Sunday 11th January Gillingham Ladies reserves took on Bedford at Beechings Cross in a fixture similar to one played earlier on in the season at Chatham Town’s Maidstone Road ground.

The game started slowly as each team took ten minutes to break the ice before being able to get a shot on target.

After this point in the game Bedford had the larger share of the possession but couldn’t find the drive to break down a strong Gills defence.

Even with the smaller share of possession, Gills still had the better chances thanks to long balls and fierce offensive play when they got onto the attack.

This style of play led to Gills Ladies taking the lead thanks to Georgia Pilbeam’s shot placed across the keeper and into the goal in the 25th minute.

Gills continued to rattle the Bedford defence until the 35 minute mark when Bedford equalised against the run of play.

Gills pushed to gain the advantage prior to half time but failed to do so, with the half time score being 1-1.

After the break Gills continued searched for a lead and were rewarded with a goal that initially appeared to be an own goal from a Bedford player but has since been given to Hollie Musmeci.

Now in full swing, Gills swiftly added to their lead thanks to a long range strike from Lydia Wills from 30 yards out into the far side of the goal.

Soon after, the game was put to bed thanks to the third goal in five minutes as Musmeci grabbed a brace with a strong header into the back of the net.

With the game now won the Gills continued to keep the Bedford side at bay and cruised to a convincing 4-1 victory.
