Gills Ladies lose in eight goal thriller

Despite a consolation goal from Natalie Crinean, a hat trick from Kelly Aldridge, two goals from Naomi Clipson plus further goals from Steph Williams and Kelly Isaac was enough for Cardiff City Ladies to crush Gillingham Ladies at Priestfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon in their latest FA Women’s Premier League South fixture.

Going into the match, Gillingham Ladies manager Simon Ratcliffe was desperate to get a win under his belt after conceding four soft goals last week against Charlton Athletic Ladies. He did make one change to the squad, he swapped goalkeeper for this last game before the Christmas and New Year break. Sophie Ledger who had an impressive game for the reserves last week against Charlton Athletic Ladies Reserves and she makes her first team debut against Cardiff City Reserves.

Michelmore

The game started with Gills Ladies on the back foot and tried to control the game from the back without making any mistakes which could let Cardiff into score.

Gillingham Ladies did get forward and Louise Lorton did work well down the wing and tried to deliver a cross to Natalie Crinean but McGlynn easily gathered up the ball.

Cardiff then won a corner after some good work from Clipson, they drove the ball into the penalty box, but the ball was cleared away by Charlotte Long.

Cardiff then took the lead on 12 minutes as Kelly Aldridge got away from Emma Michelmore on the right wing and she got the edge of the penalty box before hitting a splendid volley which Ledger had no chance of saving and the ball curled into the top right corner of the net.

Cardiff nearly had a second goal as they worked through the Gills Ladies defence again and it took two clearances from Michelmore to deny Kelly Aldridge.

Then Cardiff added a second goal on 16 minutes as again they worked though the Gills Ladies defence and Aldridge simply got the ball before hitting a long and high shot which Ledger did well to save but cannoned off Ledger and nestled into the back of the net.

Cardiff continued to look for a third goal bit they were kept out by some good last gasp defending from Emma Michelmore and Lauren Williams kept them out.

 

Cardiff then added a third goal on 26 minutes as some more good work on the wing let in Clipson to have a shot on goal and Ledger did well low to save the shot but she couldn’t stop the ball from going under her and the ball rolled into the back of the net.

Cardiff nearly added a fourth as Steph Williams broke downthe wing and ran towards goal, she held off Michelmore well before hitting a low shot towards goal but Ledger did well to save her shot high to her left and deflected the shot out for a corner.Sophie Brown

Then Cardiff did add a fourth goal on 35 minutes as Naomi Clipson worked well on the edge of the box and delivered a low shot from outside the penalty box which Ledger did have trouble saving the shot but she couldn’t get hold of it and the ball crawled into the back of the net.

Gillingham Ladies then won a corner after a shot from Lauren Phillips was deflected wide. Emma Tune drilled the ball in the ball was flicked on by Rachel Ahern and Louise Lorton was there to drill the ball towards goal but she got too much on her shot and the ball went high over the cross bar for a goal kick.

Natalie Crinean then had a chance to get Gillingham Ladies on the score sheet as she got a goal after some good work from Rachel Ahern but she drilled her shot wide of the goal, on the next attack she got the ball from Lauren Phillips and got away from her defender before placing a low shot past McGlynn and into the back of the net.

The second half with Gills Ladies looking for another goal to get back close to Cardiff but it was Cardiff who got another goal on 49 minutes as some more good work on the left saw Kelly Isaac get the ball unmarked in the middle of the penalty box and she rounded Ledger before placing the ball into the back of the net.

Sarah Wiltshire had a great chance to score a sixth for Cardiff as she got away from her defender before hitting a powerful shot from outside the penalty box but Ledger did well to tip her shot over the bar for a corner.

Cardiff then won a penalty on 73 minutes as Emma Michelmore fouled a Cardiff player in the box, Kelly Aldridge stepped up and drilled the ball left past Ledger and into the back of the net to complete her hat trick.

Cardiff then completed the scoring by adding an seventh goal on 83 minutes as Steph Williams got the ball from the wing and she turned her defer defender before hitting a low shot past the out stretched Ledger and the ball zipped into the back of the net.
