Despite conceding a late goal, a goal each from Chloe Cavenagh and Ashleigh Loosemore was enough for Gillingham Ladies Reserves to progress though the second round of the Reserves League Cup as they defeated Charlton Ladies Reserves.

Gillingham Ladies Reserves manager Jason Wright was not happy after his side lost three nil against Crystal Palace last week and he was hoping for another good cup performance as they looked to bounce back.

The game started with Gillingham on the back foot as Charlton had the first chance as they won a corner and the ball was not cleared away and Hope Nash had a chance to score from inside the penalty box but she scuffed her shot and the ball went wide for a goal kick.

Charlton then won another corner but the attack was chased down by Georgia Reece and Bonnie Long who were working hard at the back.

Gillingham then took the lead as Georgia Pilbeam broke though on goal, Alexandra Baker came rushing out to block her shot, the ball fell to Ashleigh Loosemore and she set up Chloe Cavenagh who drilled a shot from outside the penalty box and the ball zipped into the top left corner of the net.

Gillingham then could have added a second goal as Pilbeam again broke through on goal but Baker again came out just in the nick of time to deny Gillingham adding a second.

But Gillingham did double their lead as some more good work from Pilbeam on the right saw her deliver a great cross to Ashleigh Loosemore and she took her time before hitting a low shot from inside the penalty box and the ball screamed past Baker and into the back of the net.

Charlton almost broke though as they looked to get back into the game but Sophie Ledger denied a point for Olivia Cole and Bonnie Long and Georgia Reece were working hard to cut out a couple of Charlton attacks.

Gillingham almost hit Charlton on the counter attack as Georgia Pilbeam broke though on goal but she rushed at her chance and hit her shot straight at Baker.

Charlton almost got on the score sheet just before half time as Sophie Blowens got past Lucie Heath and got though on goal but her shot was excellently saved at point blank range from Ledger and he ball was cleared away.

The second half started with Gillingham looking to add third goal and close out the game but it was Charlton who had the first chance of the second half as they won a corner, the ball was not death and they had a chance to score but their shot was cleared off the line by Georgia Reece.

Francesca Tye was then introduced into the action and she had another to score for Charlton after some good play down the wing, and she was put though on goal but she scuffed her shot and the ball was easily saved by Ledger.

Ledger was at heart of the action again as a cross from Keira Jennings came the way of Kylie Manktelow and she held off her defender before hitting a low shot towards goal but Ledger again showed great agility to save the shot to her left and deny Charlton another chance.

Gillingham then had a chance to finish the game off as they won a corner, the ball fell to Cavenagh who tried to chip the ball over Banen but she tipped the ball into the path of Pilbeam who tried to hit the shot into the net but the ball was cleared off the line and the ball was cleared away.

Charlton had one chance to get on the score sheet and cause some panic in stoppage, a corner was cleared to Daisy Monaghan who hit a powerful shot towards goal but again the ball was excellently saved by Ledger.

Charlton eventually got on the score sheet in stoppage time as a corner was crossed in and was not dealt with by the Gillingham defence and a shot from Charlton went through the legs of Georgia Reece and ended in the back of net. Charlton rushed the ball back to the half way line to restart but they ran out of time to get an equalising goal.
