Gillingham Ladies Lauren Williams topped off a captain’s performance with a winning goal as she and her team-mates collected their first points of the season against Keynsham on Sunday afternoon.

Reflecting on the important afternoon for the club, Williams believed the Gills could have scored more with team-mate Ashlee Hincks having a collection of brilliant chances: “Ashlee had a fantastic strike which came off both post which was unfortunate and then she had another one where the keeper made a fantastic save so if we put our chances away at half time we could have been comfortable at three or four nil up.”

It wasn’t just Hincks with the chances, Williams herself admitted she should have opened her account in the game earlier: “I had a chance before but I was a bit indecisive about what to do but as soon as the second chance came out to me I wanted to hit it best as I could and luckily it went into the bottom corner.”

Reflecting on the day overall, Williams was full of praise of how Gillingham fans matched the occasion with their support: “It was fantastic and obviously very different to what we’re used to.”

"We really look forward to the next home games and encouraging as many people as we can to come along and watch."

“When we came out to do the line out it took us back a little bit. It’s absolutely brilliant for us as a club that that many fans have come to support us and long may it continue. We really look forward to the next home games and encouraging as many people as we can to come along and watch.”

More important than the occasion however was the three points and Williams was delighted the Gills finally got their league campaign going.

“We’ve had two tough games. Our first trip to Tottenham was difficult and the mid-week trip to Brighton was a tough game so it’s really nice to come here, for our first home game, and get some well deserved points on the board and get us up and running for the season.”

Will Gillingham Ladies be able to get two wins in a row as they welcome Copeswood on Sunday 21st September? Will you be there to match the support received against Keynsham? Come on you Gills!
