Merricks: “I’ve been really impressed by all of the girls this season”

Following the Reserves defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, Manager Amy Merrick’s was positive with her sides outing in their last game of the season;

“I think we performed well, we were slow to get started but it’s always hard to play against a team that don’t keep the ball on the floor. I think the girls were very disciplined, worked very hard and it showed when we managed to press on in the last thirty minutes and get two well deserved goals. The second half was the highlight of the game for me, we dictated play more and threatened them more in their half. Both of the players I brought on as subs also worked hard, Becky [Mackley] scoring our first goal aswell.”

In a season of varying results, Merricks spoke of the quality difference in the same opponent teams one week to the next, following Gills Reserves 5-0 win over the same opponents Tottenham weeks earlier;

“In this league you can play the same team twice in a row but they can always turn up with a completely different side, with more experienced players. The girls should take that as a compliment that Tottenham felt the need to change their team completely. And that we still managed to perform like we did and keep it to a tight score line.”

With the Reserves season now complete, Merricks is happy with the progress of the squad and has eyes on preparations for next season;

“I’ve been really impressed by all of the girls this season, the way they’ve improved and developed has been vital for our preparations for next season. We will take our positives from the last few weeks into pre season and concentrate on our performances and I’m sure our results will come with that.”
