After a dominating 4-2 win over Cardiff City Ladies on Easter Sunday, Gills Ladies manager James Marrs was absolutely ecstatic with the team performance from the game and another three points on the board.
“I’m so pleased especially coming off the back of last week. Although we preformed well last week, we still lost so sometimes that can affect the team, and the team can get down about the result. So we didn’t do that today and we stuck to our morals and stuck to out game-plan and the team gave me that for the whole 90 minutes.
The conditions did play their part at the beginning of both half’s and First Team Coach James Wheeler mentioned how well the team coped playing in very damp and sometimes drenching conditions.
“The conditions were tough today but the girls out there on the pitch showed a lot of desire. Our girls just wanted it a lot more. And with the build up we have had over the last few weeks including winning the Kent Cup Final and the highs and lows against Arsenal Ladies last week and the kind of togetherness we have a team at present, we kind of showed today especially where Cardiff did put us under spells of pressure but the weather did help the girls put in a great performance.”
Despite the result, James said that there will some room for improvement especially with the next fixture coming against Keynsham Town next week.
“I think that we can be a little bit more professional in our defensive display. To score four goals and to concede two goals where we not under that much pressure in and around out eighteen yard box. It will be something we will be working on in the week. We also probably had a few more chances and it could have been a little bit mor comfortable than the result actually ended up being, but having said that the girls gave me 100 percent and that’s all it ask for at the end of the day.”
With the team now on a great winning run but the team now have three away games in a row starting with a trip to Keynsham Town next Sunday,
“It is going to be a really tough game against Keynsham and we are going to there place and it will be even harder. Their ground is really nice and their 4G surface is really nice to play on but any team can beat any other team in this league and that’s what makes this league really exciting. We do have competitive games every week and next week will be one of them.”
Also Marrs was keen to stress that the side has not won the title and that the team need to take it a game at a time.
“We are not even thinking about the league title at the minute, we are just focused on the next game and we are taking it one game at a time. We beat the opposition and we move onto the next game. If we manage to pick up any silverware at the end of the season, them I’m sure me, James and the rest of the girls will be pleasantly happy but we will wait and see. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves just yet and be complacent and then things start tumbling around you so we are focused on getting the girls the right tools to give the girls the right performances and the hopefully the points as well.”
Gills Ladies are away to Keynsham Town Ladies next week and their last home game is on the 18th May against Coventry City at London road, Chatham where they could secure the FA Women’s Premier League South title.
