Gills Ladies Reserves manager Amy Merricks was upbeat after the team came away from Sunday’s home game against Tottenham Ladies Reserves as 5-0 winners, with goals from a Lauren Williams brace, Holly Learmonth, Emily Lyons and Sophie Brown finding the net.
Speaking after the game Merricks had the following to say about Gills Reserves win;
“The girls performed very well, it’s one thing winning the game but winning and having a great performance is extra special. The football they played was fantastic and I think the difference was that they worked hard for the whole 90 minutes, staying positive on and off the ball.”
Going into the game the reserves had lost two games on the bounce in March, seeing 4-0 defeats to both Brighton and Portsmouth. Merricks’ was pleased to see a turn around in the scoreline,
“Our quality of football was much better, which meant we kept the ball for longer and played our way out of tight places easily. We had targets to keep the ball and set the tempo and the girls did that, it was very impressive.”
Even though the Reserve team have one game of the season remaining, manager Merricks is hoping that the squad will take note of the development this season and put the progress into next seasons performance;
“We still have one more game left, Tottenham away, so we still have another chance to keep our end to the season positive, I think the girls are really starting to enjoy playing the way we do now and they are improving, that’s what’s important. I’m very excited about next season and so are the girls, we have a lot to play for and a lot of targets that will be put in place for us to reach, the atmosphere is very positive at the moment and it’s important we take that into next season with us.”
