Following Sunday’s first defeat of the season we spoke to Gills Ladies defender Rachel Ahern for her opinions on the Lewes game, Rachel talked about how the game was a bit of an off day; “Lewes got an early goal, which is something we haven’t been used to this season. So I think that took us a bit by surprise. But we did have a couple of chances in the first half to equalize and even go ahead. But it was one of those days when normally the shots would have gone in, it just wasn’t happening on Sunday.”
Gills Ladies defense has an amazing record so far this season, smashing club records already, in 16 games so far this season the Gills have kept 10 clean sheets and conceding just 7 goals. Rachel said that having broken club record this season is a buzz that will make the team bounce straight back; “Its a great feeling for the team to have kept so many clean sheets. It gives everyone added confidence and the belief that even after our little slip up on Sunday, we have the quality to come back and continue to maintain such a good defensive record.”
When asked about the upcoming fixtures against Meridian in the Kent Cup quarter finals and the penultimate game against Lewes at home in the League before Christmas, Rachel was keen for the girls to get wins under their belts before the winter break; “Definitely! We want to get back into winning ways going into the Christmas break. A win this week will mean we’re through to the next round of cup, which would be good. Then the following week we play host to Lewes and getting revenge will be sweet and set us in good stead for the new year.”
