Since her arrival at Gillingham Ladies from Ebbsfleet this summer, it’s been non-stop for Gills new number nine Lisa Fulgence.
Leading the line for the Gills for every game of their unbeaten run in the league, Lisa collected her first goal of the season on Sunday against Charlton Athletic Ladies.
“It was more of a relief to score on Sunday!” Lisa confessed, “It was like a weight had been lifted. It had been playing on my mind a bit that I had not opened my account, but whether I’m scoring or not I will put in 100% for the team. After scoring a few in pre-season I didn’t expect no goals in my first few games.”
That was certainly set right against Charlton as Lisa was sharpest to a loose ball in the six yard box to post the Gills first goal of the match. The Gills went on to secure a 3-1 win and Lisa revealed it was a big result for her and her team-mates; “We were absolutely buzzing before the game and the performance of the squad amped us up even more.”
“After the game it was more of the same really, but it was more about the three points and staying top of the league then about Charlton. We could have played anyone and felt the same way after the game.”
At the moment it appears no matter the opponent, Kent’s best women’s team can come away with a result. Hard work on the training ground, a good attitude amongst the squad and an unstoppable work rate are attributes Lisa gives to the Gills great start. But it will not stop there. “It’s been a real good start, we’ve done well but we won’t rest on that.”
“We will keep pushing for more, through training and then into games. We want to win every game and we go into every game with the belief we can.”
Life at Gills is going well at the moment and we asked Lisa how she’s enjoying a new chapter in her football, “On a personal level it’s been a great decision to join Gillingham, after so many years playing I’m learning new things every week with James and Jack.”
“I’m back enjoying every part of football from training to games and that’s all I wanted. Life at Gills is different but in a good way, I’ve been welcomed with open arms and I’m enjoying every minute of it. The girls are great we have a family ethos at the club and it’s awesome.”
Now the team’s attention turns to the League Cup game as Tottenham Hotspur Ladies visit Chatham Town on Sunday. “We approach every game the same way, Spurs will be no different.” Lisa told us, “Train hard, play hard! We always want to play our game; it’s worked for us so far this season so we will continue on the same road.”
“Hopefully we will get the result to match!”
