Gillingham Ladies Reserves ready for Sunday’s first game of the season

Gillingham Ladies Reserve team manager Bill Long has revelaed his team of players are prepared and focused for their first game of the season against West Ham Ladies at home.

Bill told us, “As a team we are looking forward to our opening league match of the season at home against West Ham United. The players have made good progress over the summer and have benefited from friendlies and also training at times with the first team.”

“We have a young reserve team squad at Gillingham and will need time to grow into senior football. Even though they are a young side we feel that they have the attributes to make this a good solid season.”

And the arrival of West Ham Ladies will provide the Gills the chance to get the season off to a great start. And whilst the Reserves have a young set up, it’s something the manager believes can work in their advantage: “The pressure will always be on the opposition due to the fact we are such a young side and we should use that to our benefit.”

“Looking towards Sunday’s game we are looking excited to play our first competitive game of the season and seeing how the players handle it.”

“West Ham won their first game against Spurs last weekend, which was a great result for them. But saying that we had a good 5-1 win against Thurrock Dynamos.”

Gills Ladies go into the match against The Hammers with good momentum, and Bill believes this is something that will only continue to flourish and develop the club as a whole, “We are adding to the squad and will look to do so all year. The reason for this statement is I am expecting some of the young players to be pushing for first team opportunities.”

Bill concluded our interview by thanking the often unsung heroes behind the club, the parents, family and guardians, who form a fantastic network of support and encouragement for the players: “I would just like to finish by saying thank you for all the support from parents throughout this pre season. I know it is difficult sometimes getting the players to training and to the games and I hope this support will continue through the season.”
