“We ask a lot from the players and they get their rewards with results like today’s.” Jack Wheeler reveals post match delight after 5-0 win

Header_2Gillingham Ladies assistant manager Jack Wheeler was full of praise for the team’s accomplished performance against Chesham Ladies on Sunday.

Speaking after their 5-0 demolition of Chesham Jack told us;  “I’m very, very happy. The girls put a great shift in today and a lot of the stuff we’ve been working on in training has transferred onto the pitch and massively improved us. So from a coach’s point of view it’s very pleasing to see as it’s a great result and a great performance.”

Sunday’s performance comes on the back of string of good results and a strong pre-season, something Jack and the management team at Gillingham Ladies applaud. “We’re really pleased with the girls as obviously now we’re putting together two or three very good performances and it’s starting to come together from the pre-season.”

“Now it’s reflecting on our work in the league with seven points out of nine, so from us it’s a massive win and a massive well done to the girls.”

Gills Ladies enjoyed the lion’s share of possession against Chesham, mounting plenty of opportunities and for large periods of the first half it seemed that killer instinct and final touch might not happen. Jack revealed he and the coaches at Gills never doubted the team would get the goals to match their work rate; “We always believe in the girls, so from the manager’s and my view we always believed we would break that down and get a second.”

“We knew the girls would get on with things and they’ve proved it again today. We never had any doubt really that we would get the second goal rather than them Chesham get an equaliser. There was never a point when we felt under the cosh and we’ve seen how the girls work together on the pitch so we know they’ll get something.”

“For me, I couldn’t see Chesham breaking us down to get that equaliser, I always thought it would be us to get the second, third and so on. All we said at half time to the girls was how strong we looked and to go forward with the belief they could get more goals. “

“We looked strong in the first half and they didn’t get many shots on goal, the ones they did get came from our own mistakes. So we said to the girls if we eradicate those mistakes then we can push on and take advantage from this game. “

And eventually the team got the goals to reflect their dominance over the game and the momentum is pushing them to a pleasing position top of the league. The momentum, Jack believes which is being built through hard work on the training ground and around match days. “We try and run this club as professionally as we can, especially with the training sessions and our match days, we ask a lot from the players and they get their rewards with results like today’s. “

“The girls have given another professional performance today and that’s why we’ve got three points. We’re now looking forward to Charlton and showing them what we’ve got and to test ourselves against some of the favourites in this league, that’s what we strive to do.”

“We had exactly the same method in Cardiff; we like to keep the professionalism. When we went away for the weekend we kept to those standards, we were well behaved in the hotel. We made sure everything was good; the players went to bed early, we had a team meal and breakfast together and it was a good team bonding exercise. It boosted our morale and the girls are a really close knit group and it’s nice to see that as well.”

“We instil a professional model but with the players and how they behave, they’re doing it for themselves too. From us- it’s a big thumbs up!”

Attention now turns to the Gills ‘derby’ in the league against Charlton, a match the Gills are already motivated for. Jack told us, “The girls are buzzing and can’t wait for next week. When the games were scheduled it was one of the one’s the girls were looking out for.”

“It’s one of our rival games and I know we won’t have to gee the girls up, they’re going to be right on it and want to go out and give a good account of themselves and try to bring back three points again to make sure we stay top of the table.”

You can support Gillingham Ladies as they attempt to defend their place top of the league when they play Charlton Athletic Ladies on Sunday 15th at Sporting Club Thamesmead. Kick off 2pm.
